Must be my day for weird posts, just thinking about something one of my users asked for an wondered if any of you guys use skype. I've never used it before and having a quick look at it wondered if maybe we could do some sort of regular certforums conference call or swap skype id's if we want to chat to each other.

    good idea, bad idea!?

I use Skype. I've got a Belkin Skype phone at home, that is wirelessly connected to my modem/router... I use it to phone my parents in France, and other friends and family. In addition, I have also purchased Skype Out for 12 months, that allows me to phone landlines in the UK and certain European countries, uisng my Skype account, and my Belkin phone. :D

Oh, and I have a 3 Skype Mobile phone. So that my missus can phone me using the Belkin when I am travelling.

I have used Skype to conference, and it was very good. Never used it for work though.

Funnily enough, I was thinking about this today. I'm looking to pick up a unit I can use on my laptop whilst Im here in Baku. Its either that or call the missus on the mobile for £1.20 a minute.

Just need to find out where I can buy one now.

I use Skype for close friends and family.

Not recommended it in a business situation partly as it uses p2p and *can* be viewed as less secure in a business environment and partly as I was a reseller for Gradwell VoIP ( www.gradwell.net ).

However, given my current job situation I have just gone for a Skype offer of free calls to UK landlines on 01 or 02 numbers at any time, plus I get a Skype-In number for people to call me and voicemail (no charge for picking up messages). This cost just £2.24 a month which I though was a bargain compared to BT when I need to be phoning agencies etc. during the day.

I use a headset which doubles for my gaming ( http://www.edimensional.com/product_info.php?products_id=122 ) plus I have a Philips usb phone plugged in too.

Occasionally quality can be on the low side but I have to say they have improved over the last year tho' at peak times with a lot of users on it can suffer. It does also seem to grab bandwidth sometimes.

Overall, yes quite pleased with it.

To dales, or anyone else who has used Skype; I'm interested in downloading it, but am wary because I've heard that it slows down your computer, even when not in use. Anyone experience these problems?

I've not noticed any difference since installing it, but of course as it sits in your system tray like msn messenger or the like if you put it on an older computer then it will be using cycles because its always active waiting for incoming or outgoing calls.

    Thanks dales & UKDarkstar.

I guess I'll give it a shot and see, then. It is free afterall. :] I'm getting tired of buying dodgy £5 phonecards to call family abroad.

I've got it and use it occasionally. I used it to call my brother in Japan England and Australia. We also use it here at work for keeping some company members in contact.

Edit: as far as slowing down the PC, I haven't noticed any difference.
