I've never really had to do hardware and Server updates for the actual infrastructure but wanted to know when updating hardware and therefore migrating from say windows 2000/2003 to Windows 2008R2 for AD would the easiest way be to install the 2008 machine and add to the domain and do a DCPROMO and add to the existing domain and move over any Operation Master Roles to the new server and then replicate and shut down the old server and remove from users and computers and sites etc?

Sorry if this is in the wrong place couldn't really find a section on general AD questions but thought it may help people doing the exam.

    Procedure would be as follows:

    1. Join new Windows 2008 Server to domain
    2. Get a good backup of 2003 DC
    3. DCPromo
    4. Make 2008 DC into a GC
    5. Check replication
    6. Leave in place for a number of days
    7. Transfer FSMO roles to 2008 DC

Cheers Craigie. I take it you still need to demote the old DC?

Yes, take off the GC first (if needed) and then demote.

Update any static IP addresses that used the old DC and update with the new DC IP address for DNS.

If it's the first 08 R2 DC in the domain and/or forest then you will need to run some prep commands beforehand. Check technet for adprep
