Does it matter if i use a sata II drive in my motherboard if it only accepts a speed of 1.5gb p/s or will it still work and it will only be at that speed and not 3gb p/s ?

A little confused as this is my first entry into the world of sata as have been using ide all along.

It should work (you may need to change a jumper or two on your mobo). You'll need to check your motherboard manufacturer's website to be sure though, as not all motherboards support backward compatibility.

If you want to swot up on it and need precise info on SATA II - here's the place to look.

    Hope this helps. :)

There should be a jumper on the drive for SATA-150. My 400GB Seagate Barracuda came with it already set, so I had to remove the jumper to enable SATA-300 (aka SATA-II).

*In theory* a SATA2 drive should recognize that it is on a SATA1 connection, and adjust itself accordingly.

However, there have been quite a number of instances where this hasn't worked that I've come across.
