So I've been playing around with RIP today. Here is my question

What is the difference between setting :

ip rip advertise 10 on the interface OR

    setting timers basic 10 180 180 240 in the config-router?

If you set it on the interface a show ip pro still shows sending updates every 30 seconds. Once you change it in config-router then it shows 10 second updates in show ip pro.

    What is the difference?

    Thanks much

    hi-
i'm not sure where to set them but i think to view them you can use (on cisco) the "show ip protocols" command. it works on my lab at least.

One works, the other doesn't,

If you set it on on the interface it only affects that interface. setting it in router mode with the timers command will set the global settings. sh ip pro shows you the global settings and not individual interface settings I believe.
I don't have any hardware to play with yet so can't verify that for myself.
