I couldn't figure out how to "close it down like any other program" on a family laptop.

The reason why I'm interested to know how to temporarily disable VMWare is because I suspect it is interfering with me reassigning a static IP address so that the laptop may join the internal network's IP scheme so it would be protected by the dual router security. However, when I attempted to manually configure the laptop's NIC IP address, it didn't keep the IP address settings I configured, and therefore the laptop was useless connected to my internal network due to IP scheme incompatibility.

once you shut down all the virtual machines (the same way you shut down real machines) and close the program everything is done and dusted... no IP should conflict....
