I might be insane here, but 1MB L1 cache???
    I thought the X2s had 128k L1 cache?

    Hi,

    Ebuyer has the x2 4200 (939) for £88.07, they don't seem to have the X2 4400.

    The cache what you're on about is the L2 cache: 1mb (2 x 512kb)

    Can't seem to find the x2 4400 (939)

The 939 socket CPU's are dying out, the AM2 socket has took over. And cheeky that processor is for the AM2 socket not the 939.

AMD started out their dual core chips with the socket 939, it's only recently they started to use the AM2 socket (as the AM2 socket is the new socket standard) :)

Thanks Ken, I hear Intel with their Dual Core are wiping the floor with AMD processors. Is that true???

One of the guys at work told me this and he stated that until AMD release the QUAD speed. AMD will lose the market on CPU's?

    Indeed they are
primarily in the desktop and low end server market though

for heavy workloads and mid to large smp configurations the AMDs still win hands down

at the low end the intel has a heat, power and performance gain, but the intel quad cores are just two dual core bits of silicon slapped together

amds quad core out later this year is a true quad core solution (note im talking about server processors here) coupled with the hypertransport and on die memory controller the opteron still holds its own in the smp arena, in fact intel dont even have a chipset that supports more than 4 sockets any more (mainly due to massive contention on the FSB for memory access from what could be 16 or 32 cores!)

amds release later this year will also include enhanced AMT-V technology such as NBT which will increase performance for VMS 20 - 30% out of the box, this is one of the main driving workloads sustaining server sales, especially in the mid range arena

Intels come back to hypertransport (CSI) is not due out till 2008 so until then intel will continue to not do quite as well in the heavy workload arena

Beat me to it :( But lets face it will you be watching a dvd, burning a DVD, surfing the net and playing the latest PC game on your PC at the same time on your desktop? However as the PC law states, if you get hardware that is 30% faster, software will be developed with 30% more functionality to take avantage of it :)

I know :) Just bought a couple of quad core servers for work, even though they may not be true quad's, it nice saying that you got them :)
