Congratulations on the job. What you move onto really depends on the organisation and situation but i have personally known people to move into web development, business analyst, consultancy, sales, infrastructure and general management.

I think with IT anything is possible with the right work ethic.

My first role was officially "Software IT Technician", however we did a rolling rota of field service, helpdesk and workshop. Anyway, this is the path I took:

Full time roles: Software IT Technician -> Senior IT Technican -> IT Manager (currently)
Part time roles: College lecturer (while I was a senior IT Technician) -> Associate Lecturer with a University (after I became an IT manager)

Now, I'm looking at where I want to do now (as my role at the moment is at a cross-roads), shall I stay technical & delve deeper into that area or shall I move more into the managerial side & progress that way or maybe even swap my main sector completely (currently brushing up on software engineering and forensics/security)...

I'm just demostrating that there are alot of different possible options, it's down to you on where you want to go/progress to...

Congrats on getting the first job! I know its no easy.

My first role was a Desktop Support Technician -> Network Administrator -> Technical Consultant ->Exchange/AD/VMware Specialist. Like Ken, I am also starting to think of whether I should continue down the technical road, or start doing more management. I am still pretty new in the field, only 7 years experience and still have time to think about this, but I know down the line I'll have to make a decision.
