I'm upgrading a friends pc & have soughted all of the hardware upgrades out & installed them.
The operating system is installed & everything works.
I've been asked to copy all of the data over to the new pc.
This is where the dilemma is, they seem to have a fast collection of porn!!
Do i copy this over to the new hard drive or copy to disc & give them this?
And how do i bring the subject up?

If your just doing this for mate ask him if you can copy the stuff or you can tell his mum he's got loads w*** pics on his comp.

On a serious note if your doing this as part of a business then it could be tricky especially if there's any really dodgy stuff on there. But if its just normal porn then ccopy it over I can't see an issue.

Before doing anything I would judge for yourself what you think the content is, (note I didnt say open), if it is just standard stuff then its up to you really how you deal with it, any hint of dodgyness I would stop any work you are doing on it, DO NOT OPEN/COPY OR DO ANYTHING WITH THE DATA. Doing so can can you in alot of trouble too.

Its going to be mostly about your own morals really, if there is anything you think maybe questionable then do you delete it and carry on or do you notify the authorities, that is up to you but please be aware you could be getting yourself involved in something you really shouldnt.

After all that doom and gloom though its proberbly normal stuff so just do what you think is best!

Check it, and if there's anything good, take a copy.

Oops, did I say that out loud? :)

Did your friend mention what data they wanted moved? If so, and they didn't mention their pr0n collection, just don't transfer it.

Mate in the end...if there is porn on there and they know about it...just inform them but do it in a joking way...I am always like that when I deal with such situations...u make a humour out of it so they dont feel embarrassed...it dont bother me if people have porn on their computer (so long as it aint the wrong kind!!) we're all human and at least they are happy to admit it :biggrin

but seriously if they know whats their on hard drive copy it over for them...they would probably be more worried if it was copied over...

If he was a real mate, he would have already given you a copy and there would be no dilemma. :)

I spoke to the person concerned this afternoon & the first thing they asked was had i made any copies for myself!!
Seems they were waiting for the call for the last 4 days!!
All OK now but they do have some strange interests in their choice of material.
It will probably be a topic of conversation when we go for a beer next!

Thanks for all the advice too.

on a serious note, if theres anything dodgy on there then grass the perv up but if its just usual stuff and good quality then it would be a waste tio just delete it and you keepiing quiet about it may ear you more respect.

If there is any quality lesbian stuff on there, i reckon you should post them somewhere so we can all test the quality .

Not a lot really, only about 5GB!!!
Seems they had only remembered about it on Friday!!
The interesting thing was looking at their browser history on what sites they had been to.
My friend & his wife are now a tad embarrassed about it, so plenty of mileage in it me thinks.:ohmy

I would class that as snooping.. there is no need to look at their browser history. :dry

If it was a childs PC with prOn on it that would be an issue. As this person i suspect is an adult, then i dont know what all the fuss is about.

    LOL! Sorry...

IMO you were asked to back it up or whatever, so just do it. At the end of the day it's none of your business.

Just copy the whole lot over to the new PC and leave it at that. I can guarantee this won’t be the last time in your IT career that you will stumble across someone’s porn collection!

From a legal point of view if it is something really dodgy then you would be advised to call the cops. We had to sign an agreement at work no matter who the customer was we would turn them in and also sign a NDA so we couldn’t go to the papers about it. Might sound crazy but we found a collection of g@y porn on someones PC when we were trying to remove spyware and this person would not like this knowledge to be public, don’t think his wife would like to know either! :biggrin

Only 5GB? Is that it? Just 5GB worth of porn? Good job you didnt take a look at my computer...on the internal hard drive alone I had over 170GB worth...and then backed up onto DVD I had about another 300GB worth...so yeah about 470GB or more lol...top quality stuff tho :biggrin but I bought a 500GB external HDD last week and have been moving it all onto there for easy ahem access :dry

Sorry should have explained more that my friends wife in recent months has been downloading things of the net.
Their old pc was infested with viruses & trojans to such an amount that it was starting to effect the operating of the pc.
I have been able now to assess where most of them have come from, hence new pc will be running better.
Also they now have a decent anti-virus program & a firewall operating.

On a side note to this dont forget to get them an anti-spyware program too. One I can recommend is a program I stumbled upon back in December called SUPERAntiSpyware. Just do a google search for it and download the free version. It works perfectly well with Vista too and seems to beat both Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware hands down :biggrin thats what you really need more than the anti-virus and firewall cos even tho we need those we also need anti-spyware apps that can find things the others cant...

If there's pr0n on the PC, then I can tell you almost assuredly where those viruses and trojans came from...
