i set up a virtual machine some time ago, and i cant remember any passwords. i am sure i left the default "administrator" password blank, but its not working.

    i dont wanna do a re-install

Can you not create another user account with Admin priveleges and then reset the System Admin password?

You could try the old "hit F10" during installation, but I'm not sure what of the newer versions of Windows (if any) that it works with.

Basically, you put in the CD and start the reinstallation process, when it gets to the "Windows is detecting and installing your devices" part, hit Shift + F10 and you get dumped into the Recovery Console without having to enter a password.

See here for a step-by-step account.

In that case the passwords will be stored in Active Directory not the local SAM (security account manager).

I don't know how to retrieve it from there as I always remember my password, it's the key afterall

Did it work? All the hack tools I have used only work with the local admin password and nothing has ever worked on a DC. :blink

Just a note - this worked on WinXP SP2 - did require a repair install, over the top, not a fresh install obviously. Bit of a pain, but for somereason it totally locked me out!

FOrgot about trying cain and able etc:(
