    Hey guys,

I recently moved over to Tiscali (Bad idea, I know now. :blink ) but can't use torrents. I don't download anything big, just E-Books, but basically I can't even do that. I've tried Utorrent and Azeurus, tried changing the port and testing it (says port ok) but just won't download.

The actual errors are 'connection error timeout'.

After doing a search online, I've seen that this is a regular Tiscali issue.

Anyone have any ideas how I can download torrents using Tiscali Broadband?

Yeah, alot of providers block the torrent ports, so if you change the port number that the software uses, then you can normally get round it. What made you move to Tiscali?

I have a usb modem, not a router, So i shouldn't need to port forward, right?

I had had Telewest/Virgin for years, but due to the falling standards in customer service, and the fact that they tried charging me 250 quid for boxes that I had returned, I decided to rid myself of virginity... I mean virgin, forever.

    Hey Guys

Just a little reminder of CertForums stance on copyrighted material. We do not condone the "sharing" of this material as it breaks many laws and ultimately is denying someone a wage for what is their work. CF Copyright Rules

Discussing the use of torrent technology is well within the terms of CertForums but lets be a little careful of what you are talking about.

    Thanks guys :biggrin

Still not going, ... not sure how to forward a port on Zonealarm...

I know it's not excuse, but... I tend to download technical guides when deciding which one to buy. Right now I want a Vista Admin guide, a TS Exchange 2007 guide and possibly a sharepoint.

With so much rubbish out there, it's always good to have a squint at it first, like going into WH smiths only morally and legally wrong.

Doesn't matter why you downloaded them; those works are protected by copyright. If you want to compare them, you can either view sample chapters on Amazon or look at them in your local bookstore.

Hope you didn't illegally download MY Vista admin guide. :dry Wish you could see how it feels to invest 6 months of your life in something, only to have someone steal your hard work, regardless of their reason for doing so.

This is no attempt to justify my actions, (which I haven't done for over 12 months) as I know full well that they could never be justifiable in any circumstance, but....

As an author, from a personal viewpoint BM I understand that anyone purely downloading your material to simply bypass having to purchase it is downright theft, I know morally and legally downloading to 'trial' technical material doesn't stand up, but would you be for it if it were proven to increase sales?

EDIT : PS, could you give a link to your book on amazon please?

Here's the link to my book on Amazon UK.

No, I'd not be for it. Sample content from my book (as well as those from other authors) can be LEGALLY viewed, where you can evaluate to your heart's content. If you like that content, you can buy the book. For instance, you can download Chapter 1 of my book from Sybex's Web site, here.

You can view it in bookstores, you can view it in the library, and you can view samples online. Therefore, for those who *really* want to evaluate it, there are MANY legal methods available. There's no justifiable reason to have the full electronic version of my book available online. Period. If you can't tell whether you want my book or not after reading a whole chapter... then you shouldn't buy my book.

Same thing goes for other electronic content. For games, there are usually demo versions available. For practice tests, there are demo questions available. For software and OSes, there are usually trial versions available. If you want to evaluate them, legal versions are out there where you evaluate them all day long. But if you want the rest of the content... you should pay the author/creator/owner for the content they worked hard to create. Anything else is theft.

Sorry for being so hard on ya, mate, but if it were your work being compromised, you'd likely do the same.

    Thanks for the link BM.

I completely understand your reason for the way you feel, working all that time, putting in so much painstaking effort only for some jerk to download it for free. But to be honest, if your books are anything like your no s**t plain and simple reasoning here, then I don't need to evaluate your books..... given the choice I'd buy your books every time. (As long as I got on with the first one, that is. :) )

You better get working on the Exchange 2007 exam study guide. 8)

I greatly appreciate the compliment, Luddy. I try to tell it as I see it, because you guys deserve nothing less than full-frontal honesty.

My good friend Will Schmied is writing the Sybex Exchange 2007 guide. Josh and I were asked to write two of the Sybex Server 2008 books, but unfortunately, with all the stuff going on at Boson, we'll be unable to do so.

Just ordered the book on Amazon.... now all I need to do it hope my work will stump up the cash for a Business copy of Vista. :biggrin

Though I'm probably a bit premature as I need to pass my 291, 293, 294 before even starting on my electives.
