    Hey guys,

    I need some help! :-)

I currently have an OEM install of xp pro and I'm wanting to format soon. Problem is that I got my current key from work, along with many others (I was allowed them btw!), and I stupidly didn't record which one I'm using. So, naturally I don't want to waste another key if it's avoidable... Is there any way to find out what my current key is? :S

    Thanks,

    Dave

The key is in the registry. However, unlike 95/98 it's encrypted.

I'm sure if you do a Google search for "Xp Key Finder Program" or similar you'll turn up something :biggrin

However, a friendly word of warning - if the key was from a volume licensing product (which I assume it was as there is a requirment for system builders to actually affix all oem COA's to the pc case) then you *may* find on activation you still have to ring MS. Doens't happen often but just occasionally so be prepared to say the company details etc.

Definitely! There is what is called SIW(System Information for Windows [1.31mb in size]) http://www.gtopala.com. Its an application that you dont even need to install. Download it and store it in a flash, insert your flash drive normally, explore the contents of your flash, double click the SIW application, when the window opens up, look at the left handside of the window and select LICENCES it will list all software installed with their corresponding keys and that includes the installed OS key... I actually use that application and it works.

    Thanks guys.

I was looking around on google but noticed there was some issues with OEM licenses and obtaining the keys. Something to do with the install CD putting in a key during install and then you register the copy within 30 days which doesn't show in the registry (as it's 2 different keys).

I'll give it a shot with these 2 applications, if it doesn't work I still have another 20+ keys, so I guess I can use one and this time document it!
