Odd licensing issue

I setup a licensing role one of our NAS servers which is a Windows Server 2008 Storage Edition server from HP. When I was entering the Licensing Service ID which I got from the Windows Server 2008 server on the Microsoft Licensing website, it only gave me Windows Server 2000 and 2003 CALs but not the 2008 CALs. I then went on to my SCCM server and installed the same role, did the same thing but this time I got my Windows Server 2008 CALs, my SCCM server is a Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition. Is this due to the flavor of windows server 2008 I have? it seems like it. Any one else experience this?

Microsoft Licensing has always seemed like a dark art to me.

I asked them if I was using an Open License for Microsoft Office 2007, connecting to a Terminal Server, would I need another license for Microsoft Office 2007 on the Terminal Server?

I got two answers, one was no you are covered, the other was yes you need to buy another license.

Dark art, I tell you!

 

Tell me about it... Every time my boss asks me a licensing question, most of the time I have to run to my desk, check and get back to him. Not to mention it changes so many times.
