    hi all

recently repaired a customers pc and installed sp3 in the process. now the customer has no sound. tried absolutley everything including uninstalling hardware / software / drivers / new drivers / speaker setup but still no sound.

sound files look as if they are playing in media player and device manager shows device installed and working ok but no sound.

hardware item is an onboard realtek number

    im looking at 2 possibles:

    1 uninstall sp3 and restest
2 just add a cheap audio card

    any ideas

I know you've already siad you tried drivers, but have you tried older drivers for the sound device? I found that after i'd installed the newer drivers available on the MS Updates site my g/f sound didn't work. So i just went back to the original drivers. I don't know why this happened, you'd expect the newer drivers to work, but hey, sometimes thats all it is.

Also, you havent done anything as obvious as plug teh speakers into the wrong socket?? Trust me it happens to more than one of us!

I've also had something similar with sound and also video after updating.

You could try going to free-codecs.com and getting one of the codec packs offered there (e.g. k-lite for XP) and installing them.

You may want to read all the info here regarding the SP3 upgrade. Did you check to make sure the hardware was compatible?

Also, check you having muted sound by mistake (had a friend do that :biggrin)

Have you run the sound test ?

and yes, roll back drivers to known working versions (should be ok)
