    Hi there,

I'm new here, so if you didn't see my intro thread, hi!

At the moment I'm a Support Technician for the NHS, I don't actually have any qualifications, I worked my way up from PC World, onto basic Service Desk calls i.e. logging and flogging then onto Service Desk Analyst until finally being promoted to Support Technician.

Problem is, I'm now in the situation where I seem to be a jack of all trades, master of none and I'm now looking to specialise in something. I've been looking at MCITP: Server Administrator as it's that sort of stuff I enjoy doing (albeit basic stuff by comparison).

So my question is, could this be self taught in my position or would I need some sort of primer first? Bearing in mind I've never touched Windows Server bar setting permissions but I do do quite a bit in AD, but again, pretty basic stuff, account creation, permissions that sort of thing.

    I'd appreciate your input.

    Thanks,

    Matt.

    Hi Matt,

The MCITP:SA requires some experience with server 2008 it's definately self studyable - but if you've not got a great deal of experience with it, you're gonna find it alot to take in.

I'd recommend getting yourself a machine with Server 2008 on it, and get familiar with it, i currently rent a virtual server with 2008 r2 on it, it's a neat way to see features, and you can pick one up fairly cheap (i pay around £32 a month) but to be able to practice what's in the material book on a live server is really usefull.

Have a look at this for study material for self paced training MCITP Self-Paced Training Kit Exams 70-640, 70-642, 70-646 : Server Administrator Core Requirements: Amazon.co.uk: Dan Holme, Danielle Ruest, Tony Northrup, J.C. Mackin, Ian McLean, Orin Thomas, Nelson Ruest: Books
