    Hi All,

I was bored last night so I ordered a new HP ML115 server to add to my home lab. Nothing too flash. 8GB mem, comes with a 160GB HD but ordered an additional 500GB WD Black HD to back-up my family photo's etc too. Gonna put this one on my wireless N at first, see how it behaves, and hardwire it if its not good enough (GF won't be happy about that!). Quad core, 2.2GHz. Now here's the interesting bit, I have a LCD TV in my bedroom I hardly use, so in my infinte wisdom  I decided to get a basic sound card and a 1GB ATI 4670 graphics card so I can use it as a bit of a media PC. Thats also why its going to be wireless, as its going in my bedroom (again, GF is gonna be thrilled I'm sure ).

Comes tomorrow morning, just thought I'd share. That is all

Its a server to help me pass my exams I kept having to tell myself. At one stage I had some daft cutting edge gaming graphics card in my basket and I thought, James, what the hell are you doing  Server 2003 not Crysis or COD 4!!!

I haven't downloaded a trial of Server 2008 cos I know what I'm like, I'll sit there all day playing with it and won't do any studying

Speaking of 2008. Has anyone heard about the increasing number of people using 2008 as their client OS??? Google it. Its got the Kernel of Vista so not as many compatibility issues as you'd imagine and even out performs Vista as a desktop OS on most things except maybe read/write tests (just).

I was for a while. It did outperform Vista but did have some incompatibilities with some games ie they wouldn't install. Then I also had the problem that I couldn't run my vmware virtual machines and the vms in hyperv at the same time (I also have the same problem between vmware workstation and virtual pc). I ended up going back to XP.

I couldn't believe how out of touch I was with the Hardware side of things mate. Seriously took me 2 hours to choose a graphics card. Loads of googling, I didn't have a clue! Then I thought, ah no how many pin are the memory chips and what does the motherboard need? 200 or 240! Arrrhhhh

Then I even started to look into getting two graphics cards and linking them using ATI's crossfire, but your motherboard has to be compliant and could I heck find what motherboard is in an ML115. Even on HP's website

Just hope it all works tomorrow and that I'm right the WD Black is a decent quietish drive . . .

Heh. Tell me about it. You need to constantly be working on hardware, otherwise you lose your knowledge as it becomes redundant. Stupid technology! If only everything stayed the same, eh? :p

I'll look into it as I'm using it on my very old laptop and it works great (much faster than vista).

Just not looking forward to the whole reinstall thing.:dry
