Well, I haven’t been on the forums much in the past month due to my promotion. But I have a spare five minutes and thought I would let you know what I have been up to.

Perhaps the largest project has been working on is a Three Tier Firewall installation for a major UK bank. The brief was to meet there security requirements which is 6 Cisco ASA 5510 Firewalls in an Active/Passive configuration, full failover, internet redundancy from two leased lines.

I designed the network from scratch and have implemented all of it on my tod. It encompasses everything from EIGRP, VPN Tunnels to third parties, different security levels, Access Lists securing each part of the network from each other and for SMTP, HTTP, HTTPS via Proxy etc. It’s nearly finished and will be definitely going on my CV.

I also performed two Server 2003 to Server 2008 domain migrations in a week, which was pretty hectic. But it was pretty cool as I needed a break from all the Cisco stuff, just your normal run of the mill SMB installation which included which included a couple of Server 2008 R2 Standard Servers:

- Exchange 2007
- Active Directory DC’s x 2
- DNS
- DHCP
- File Server
- Print Server
- SQL Server

Scripting out mapped drives and the norm for logins and GPO’s for things like Printers, Folder Redirection, Offline Files etc. Repointing A and MX records and recreating Firewall rules so that the environment is more secure.

Installed Hosted Websense, that was interesting as it doesn’t work like the normal flavour!

Configured various GPO’s for terminal servers that require meeting banking standards.

Performed various health checks on customers networks and made recommendations on how we could improve them, e.g Gigabit Switches, configure iLO, lock down SMTP etc.

Installed and configured a couple of BlackBerry Enterprise Servers 5.0.2 on Server 2008.

Installed a few Cisco 877 ADSL routers and created VPN tunnels.

Installed a couple of SonicWall Firewalls as well using Network Load Balancing across two ADSL lines for redundancy.

It's been pretty busy, but the company expect you to be able to go into any environment and come out smelling of roses

Been dealing with some of your colleagues recently building some VPN tunnels.

You do like your change control

 

Need to get on the VMware band wagon, we have been doing more alnd more SAN installs with VSphere 4.

So I wouldn't mind getting involved in some of that.
