    Ok I must be missing something,

    How do you carry out a network install of Win98?

    I have tried to copy the contents of the win98 folder from the CD but get an error saying that it cant copy ActiveX or something or other. I have shared the CD rom drive on the server and booted the laptop using a network boot disk then tried to install it from there, but when I try to run the setup.exe prog i get the following error:-

    Please wait while Setup initialises
    Windows Setup requires 'largest executable program size' to be at least
    442368 bytes to run

    I did this some time ago, Derek - not entirely sure what's going wrong for you here :idea:

    I just shared the i386 folder on the "server", then used a network bootdisk on the laptop to connect to it, then just ran setup.exe - worked a treat !

    Sorry - got any more info on what might be causing the problem here ?

    not sure Jak

    think it might be memory I managed to complete a win 2000 network install but win 98 just wont work. I dont have an I386 forlder on the win 98 disc either, just a 'Win98' folder that contains the *.CAB files.

    Oops - my bad, Derek :oops: You're right - no I386 on Win98.

    What I did was create a folder with the contents of the whole Win98 CD, then connect and run setup.exe. I can't imagine it's a memory issue if you can install w2k (was this on the same machine ?)

    :)

    Yeah it was the same machine.

    I have managed to sort it, I fdisked the hard drive and created a folder then copied the contents of the Win98 folder on the CD, however whenever i tried to run setup i got an error that said 'Unable to control A20 line ', After a bit of googling i discovered that it was memory related and had to add /M:1 to a line in config.sys, namely this one

    device=c:\windows\himem.sys /m:1

    I then rebooted using a boot disc and ran setup.....it's now installing 98

    Boy am I pleased as it was starting to get just a LITTLE pee'd off with it.

    thanks for the help anyway Jac.
