I was planning on obtaining my MCSE 2003 certification, but I have been hearing rumors about that exam retiring. I have five books, and been studying on and off, so should I continue studying for the MCSE 2003, or should I start studying the newer 2008 server exams?

    thanks

What do you work with? While there are a few exams that have been/are being retired, none of the core exams are. MS has not indicated when the exams for the MCSA/MCSE will be retired, however our estimation is not for a few years, due to the popularity of 2003.

Personally, I would aim for the MCDST and if you work with 2003 the MCSA - you can always do the upgrade exams to 2008 when your ready for it :)

As far as I know don't think the MCSE 2003 would be retiring anytime soon. Best wishes:) however the 2008 route is much easier.

I've heard the MCSE to MCITP:EA upgrade exams are absolutely solid :(

I didn’t think the upgrade exam was too bad but I did do loads of lab work to get up to speed with Server 2008. Ended up buying the MCITP:EA MS Press books (the whole boxed set) rather than getting just the upgrade materials.

Well that's what I have read from tek tips web and forum from some of the top notch guys that sat the 2008 exams:)

Even a contractor on our server team also told me to sit the MS 2008 exam as they are a lot easier.
