    Hi All

Just wondered if any of you have a home NAS that you would recommend? I'm currently at bursting point for storage on mobiles, ipads etc having a young family, we take a lot of pics. I've got a few USB hard drives knocking around which is not ideal at all and I've now sold all of my aging server and network hardware.

I'm thinking about buying a 4 bay QNAP 453, with 4 x 3TB WD Red drives as RAID 5. I wouldn't mind your opinions please, what you're running, what you would recommend please. An alternative would be to buy a gen 8 HP Micro but I fancy the simplicity of a NAS that's made for home data storage rather than tinkering as I am happy with Azure, VMware labs etc these days for my studies

    Cheers
    James

I love my Synology DS1513+, so much so that I have three of them, I use one for pure iSCSI for my lab, the other two are sync partners for data.

If I were going for a Qnap I would probably look at their 653 Pro model, it looks the bee's and it's currently £559 on Amazon.

I think I might just have got the last one... I bought the QNAP TS-453A-4G 4 Bay NAS Enclosure with 4GB RAM as it was on offer for £309.99! Love a bargain and 4 disks will do me for now. 4 x WD Red 3TB, right price per GB for me and 16GB Crucial ram for £46.49 as the forums all say it can take it. Happy days, something to play with when I get home from Germany tomorrow

**Edit: Just googled yours mate, get rave reviews and look very smart

Cheers mate. Got a discount on Prime day so looking forward to playing with the NAS when I get home. I possibly should have gone for higher capacity disks but it should be fine for me for a few years, I think :S

Interesting to see the comments. We used to use QNAPs over in Canada but dropped them for Synology after a number of bodged firmware problems, units hanging when drives hit capacity with no rectification except to wipe the array and reconfigure. Support was dire and lackluster to, at one point 'Yeah, I'll raise it to devs but don't expect a fix anytime soon'. Good to hear they seem to have sorted themselves out but I'll be sticking to Synology's myself for the moment, no problems for me but that doesn't preclude others from having similar experiences to me on the other side :)

I tell you what boys, I love this QNAP. Got Windows 10 installed on it while the upgrade from 8 is still free. Haven't had loads of time play with it but so far it seems really rapid

I am still umming and ahhing about the 653 Pro, I don't need it you understand, I already have 3 DS1513+s, 2 HP MicroServers, 3 Shuttles and a FreeNAS box acting as a backup to media storage used on 2 of the DS1513+s but I just love Tech and the more I look at the 653 Pro the more I think... could I get away with it??

Course mate, completely understand. I'm the same, I love kit and more features. I have a general rule of thumb which is basically, if something is on offer, I'll buy it because I love a bargain :) If I don't really need it I wont pay full price but a sale, I can't resist, or good cashback as is the way these days
