    Microsoft to give away anti-virus

Microsoft is poised to start giving away security software.

The company is reportedly trialling free anti-virus software internally and said the beta version would be released "soon".

Called Morro, the software will tackle viruses but lack the broader range of utilities, such as parental locks, found in paid-for security suites.

Morro will be Microsoft's second venture in the highly competitive security market.

Microsoft's first attempt revolved around the Windows Live OneCare service that did not succeed in turning many customers away from rivals such as Symantec and McAfee.

Microsoft plans to discontinue Live OneCare once the Morro software is ready.

No specific date has been given for when Morro will be released, but in the past Microsoft has said it would be out by the end of 2009 at the latest.

Free and Microsoft may not be a total bargain

I'm willing to give it a go, most likely MS has bought out a proper AV company and just rebranding it as MS (with a few tweaks) :)

      Here we go again.
How long before Europe sues them and makes them take it out again because of all the poor-ickle-wickle AV suppliers who start complaining...

lol, the EU has to do something to get some money in, I know let's slap a multi-million euro/pound lawsuit on MS

HA HA I was thinking exactly the same thing!!!! Soon as MS take X % stake of a market companies kick off screaming anti- competition laws etc. All I can say is its a good job MS has got enough money to not care!

Oh and I agree with Ken, MS make me laugh the way they just buy someone, then change the badge ha ha Good on em I say

Considering all the "proper AV companies" still exist, I'm not so sure they've done that. :D heehee!

The antivirus is just a stripped down version of onecare from what I gather. On this issue I think Microsoft have a duty to protect their OS and releasing AV software is a step in the right direction. To me I wonder how many viruses are released by the AV makers to keep their profits up.
