    Hi Folks,

I was just paddling around on the M$ site and have a quick question. I know that A+ and N+ together count as an elective for MCSA2K3, however the only certs that count as an elective for MCSE2K3 are MCSA/MCSE2k. Does MCSA2K3 not count as an elective for MCSE2K3 then? :blink

    Thanks guys,

    J.

Because the exams needed to become MCSE 2003 are the same as MCSA 2003, up to a point, then you haven't really done an additional exam as an elective.

    Make sense? :blink

Whilst the A+ and Network+ certs are classed as electives for MCSA MS don't consider them good enough for someone attempting to become an MCSE, quite simply because they don't test to the level, or apply the skillsets that MS want.

So after MCSA2K3 there's four exams to achieve MCSE2K3 (including the elective) rather than three - or am I being dense?

Depends on what you choose as your elective for MCSA.

    Choose A+/Network+ = Four
Choose MCDST = Four (I think, havent looked)
    Choose another = 3.

    juice142,

That is correct, the MCSA2K3 certificate is not an acceptable elective for the MCSE2K3. However, if you compare the requirements for the MCSA2K3 and MCSE2K3, you will find that you are well on your way towards MCSE2K3.

    MCSA 2003 Requirements:
    1. Core Exams: Networking Systems (Two Exams Required)
      1. Exam 70-290: Managing and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Environment
      2. Exam 70-291: Implementing, Managing, and Maintaing a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure
    2. Core Exams: Client Operating System (One Exam Required)
      1. Exam 70-270: Installing, Configuring, and Administering Microsoft Windows XP Professional
      2. Exam 70-210: Installing, Configuring, and Administering Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
    3. Elective exams (One Required)
      1. Exam 70-089: Designing, Implementing, and Managing a Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003 Infrastructure
      2. Exam 70-227: Installing, Configuring, and Administering Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2000, Enterprise Edition
      3. Exam 70-228: Installing, Configuring, and Administering Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition
      4. Exam 70-235: TS: Developing Business Process and Integration Solutions Using BizTalk Server 2006
      5. Exam 70-262: TS: Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2005 – Implementing, Managing, and Troubleshooting
      6. Exam 70-284: Implementing and Managing Microsoft Exchange Server 2003
      7. Exam 70-299: Implementing and Administering Security in a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network
      8. Exam 70-350: Implementing Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2004
      9. Exam 70-431: TS: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 – Implementation and Maintenance

    MCSE 2003 Requirements:

    1. Core Exams: Networking System (Four Exams Required)
      1. MCSA 2003 meets two of four Core Exams: Networking System requirements plus
      2. Exam 70-293: Planning and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure
      3. Exam 70-294: Planning, Implementing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Active Directory Infrastructure
    2. Core Exams: Client Operating System (One Exam Required)
      1. MCSA 2003 meets the Core Exams: Client Operating System requirement for MCSE 2003
    3. Core Exams: Design (One Exam Required)
      1. Exam 70-297: Designing a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Active Directory and Network Infrastructure
      2. Exam 70-298: Designing Security for a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network
    4. Elective exams (One Exam Required)
      1. Any of the MCSA 2003 electives counts as a MCSE 2003 elective

So, after earning the MCSA 2003 certificate, you would only need three more exams to earn the MCSE 2003 certificate.

    I hope this helps.
