Today, the gap between the world’s rich and poor is wider than ever. Global injustices such as poverty, AIDS, malnutrition, conflict and illiteracy remain rife.

Despite the promises of world leaders, at our present sluggish rate of progress the world will fail dismally to reach internationally agreed targets to halve global poverty by 2015.

World poverty is sustained not by chance or nature, but by a combination of factors: injustice in global trade; the huge burden of debt; insufficient and ineffective aid. Each of these is exacerbated by inappropriate economic policies imposed by rich countries.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. These factors are determined by human decisions.

2005 offers an exceptional series of opportunities for the UK to take a lead internationally, to start turning things around. Next year, as the UK hosts the annual G8 gathering of powerful world leaders and heads up the European Union (EU), the UK Government will be a particularly influential player on the world stage.

A sea change is needed. By mobilising popular support across a unique string of events and actions, we will press our own government to compel rich countries to fulfil their obligations and promises to help eradicate poverty, and to rethink some long-held assumptions.

MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY urges the government and international decision makers to rise to the challenge of 2005. They are calling for urgent and meaningful policy change on three critical and inextricably linked areas: trade, debt and aid.

Please take a moment to visit the above site and if you can help please do, CertForums is displaying a banner to raise awareness of this campaign and has also made a donation raised from the recent premium members contributions.

Slypie, I held back from responding to your previous post as didnt feel I had the time to respond accordingly and providing enough information to make a clear point. I came back today to make my post but you have edited your post.

    Can I ask why? :)

For those intersted the makepovertyhistory campaign is not soley about raising money, heres a link to the What We Want part of the site.

Also a detailed article on the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Trade Justice Movement website

SimonV, I edited my post as I felt it was a bit harsh and not appropriate but I stand by what I said. I just find it a bit hard to stomach mega rich stars asking for money.

Actually, I can. I wanted to help the work of this fine site, not throw money at a cause that is so amorphus and huge. My money is hard earned, and I contribute it to things that impact me directly. If I wanted to contribute to a charity, I would have sent my money to the Red Cross, since I have worked with that charity and know first hand the good they do. I do not know this charity, and if it is like most, most of the money goes to overhead and advertising, and very little to the actual cause.

Is the site now making so much money that it does not need contributions for site maintenance and improvement? :blink

Maybe we should all be optimistic and hope that things do happen with this live 8 thing. I just feel that the problem isn't with the countries it's who is in charge of the countries that is the problem and I feel the only way to genuinely change the state of Africa is to change the way it's run by corrupt leaders and officials. It really pisses me off seeing kids starving whilst their country decides to invest in weapons rather than food...:(

To Mary and Mitz, have you taken a moment to look at the MakePovertyHistory site ? If so, you will see exactly what the cause is all about. It is not local, not national, nor even can it be classed international. It is a truly global cause that touches every living (or more significantly) dying individual human being on this planet.

On behalf of CertForums, I apologise if you object to our donation on the Community's behalf, and if you really feel so strongly that you don't want to give to this, contact myself or Si personally and we will address this for you.

We most certainly do not make "so much" that we can afford to give money away to random causes - most of the money, after paying for hosting and running costs of CF is kept in an account in case of any unforeseen costs, eg legal fees involved as a result of comments that "pass through the net" (which I'm glad to say are practicaly negligible).

Finally, I stress one more time that no individual in anyway connected with CF receives one single penny from this - our time is all given by ourselves freely.

    Thanks.

I think its more of a principle thing Jak, doesnt really matter what the charity was/cause is, its just that Premium members sign up for a perticular set of reasons, and thier money was given away with no consultation what so ever, I think thats the main issue and I had a feeling it would pop up as soon as I read the initial post

I understand that Ryan, and it's a fair enough point. As I mentioned above,

We will address any Member who is concerned or unhappy about what we have done with the money they have contributed to the site. I will extend the above message to any Member who feels this way.

As I said, please contact myself or Si directly about it - it's probably tidier and more discreet to do it off-Board.

    Thanks.

As your Premium membership was not initiated until after I made the "small" but highly significant donation then you have no worries as to what it has been used for.

The donation of £20 that was made has now been refunded to the CF piggy bank and I have taken the money from my own pocket. I made a mistaken presumption that I was making a contribution on behalf of CF and mistakenly and without notice took action that was inappropriate. Please accept my apology.

Personally I was happy for a percentage of my subscription to be donated (and I'm pretty sure mine was included in that donation?). Looks like I was in the minority. Maybe, with hindsight, you should have had a straw poll? Still, I'm a little gutted that the decision has been reversed...

I'm glad you feel that way, but we have a growing community at CF and as I mistakenly presumed we don't all share the same views and beliefs, its not the first time I've made this presumption and I guess it wont be the last. I must make a more conscious effort (just like I said that last time I did this  ) to take the whole communities opinions into consideration before taking action and again I apologise for not doing so.

First just want to say thank you Si for seeing our side to. It not that we don't understand what your doing. However, that money we felt should only pertain to this site. I would rather see it go toward IT voucher or an amazon gift certificate for a give away on the site. Or specially for a long time member that has been burned out of their home and needs help to rebuild, or one that has lost their job and needs help to pay family bills.

Now I'll just be moving on.
