Very early in the development of Linux (starting in 1991) Alan Cox debugged/wrote most of the networking susbsystem in Linux. He, at one time, was also one of the best, and best known, Linux kernel developers, but has since dropped out of kernel development to pursue other interests. He developed and maintained an entire version of the Linux kernel on his own. His version was identified by an "ac" in the version numbers, e.g. 2.4.11-ac.

Alan Cox is one very talented guy and, until he started pursuing some other interests, was considered by many to have more influence and stature in the Linux world than anyone except Linus Torvalds himself.

He's also the most famous person in IT to have his laptop explode.... :biggrin
