If you saw my previous thread on the processor this is still part of my hunt for a laptop... Im wondering if you guys have any upper edge in the market and can maybe show me a model i havent found yet that could solve my problem?

This is what i would like... Ill be using it for my student needs over the next 3 years.. some programming will be done but nothing to hectic... Processor nothing less than 1.6ghz and I think 1.8ghz would be a nice max for now (budget budget budget! :( ) 512mb - min amount of RAM - will be ok to run one Virtual Machine until i upgrade it myself to 1gb with another 512mb in the future... Screen size isnt a matter.. just as long as i can see the stuff im supposed to see! :biggrin DVD Writer would be nice.... Video card doesnt matter either as i dont want to be playing games on it so shared RAM for video is ok....

So anyone know of something good i can look at? post a link please!

    Thanks guys!:biggrin

I was going to recommend what I bought to you because it was such a good value, but it isn't nearly as good a value outside the US. I can't believe how much difference there is in HP's pricing between here in the US and in the UK. The same laptop I purchased for $1000 here (2.0 ghz Turion, 2-80 gig hard drives, ATI Express 200M with 128 megs dedicated ram, 17" monitor, 1 gig ram) has a price equivalent to $1690 on the HP UK site.

You might not have liked it because it is heavy, but I love it because of the huge monitor, and that and the second hard drive are where all the weight comes from.

    Zimbo,

If you can afford it, I'd spring for 1 gig of ram. Having that extra ram available with shared memory is going to make a lot of difference when you're running VM's.

Which is beyond the affordability of most mortals with low expendable income :biggrin

    (I'm jealous... I want one. They're purdy. )

Saw this, also on the Dell website. Currently with an offer for a free kick up to 2GB RAM (if I read it right...)

    Details of Laptop:

    http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/inspn_6400?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs

    Details of Memory Special Offer

    http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/compare.aspx/nb_essentials?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs

Unfortunately, no DVD RW, but at £489 inc VAT and delivery, I thought it was a bargain.

And another thing with the Dells offers, according to some people the offers they have are misleading and the delivery times are up the wall . They sent one to my mate a day late , then left a note saying well be back on such a date in the afternoon, then i went to wait in for him and theyd already been buffoons i tell you lol

Hi there, I have just taken delivery of a new HP machine which seems great. Had one before that died following an accident... but this one is a DV2000 model and has duel core processors and a gig of ram and and 100 gig drive and runs quiet and quick. Only problem is the over shiny case which shows all the finger marks

Eddie - perhaps this is more of a courier issue than the entire Dell Corporation being at fault here :)

I use Dells at work, not bad to be honest but I prefer my trusty ThinkPad. I could play football with it and it would still work! :biggrin

If teachers want to buy a lappy, this is the make we point them at. Acer seem to have a decent customer service and replcement scheme.

Chech out Acer's Home Site for more details.
