Problem Laptop battery

OK so i was being a tight ass and bought replacement cells for my battery, that and i like taking things apart!
Put all the new cells in and put battery in, charging light came on, Windows tray icon said battery charging but still showed the cross as if no battery was detected. I pulled the charger out ant laptop died, after bout 5 mins or so the charging light will go out.
Now it doesnt come on at all!
ANy ideas?? I havent got a multimeter so cant test the voltages.

I've got the battery to carry on charging, it was a bios update needed that stopped totally discharged batterys from charging up again, however its not charging cos the laptop wont power off it!
Now windows 7 says plugged in and charging, however it shows a red cross on the battery still. Now i can see that windows 7 is showing big problems with regards to batterys through a google search.
