    Hey guys,

I'm trying to connect to the exchange server via the iPhones mail application however it requires opening a lot of ports making it incredibly insecure.

    Any Suggestions ?

Either connect it using SSL, open the relevent ports and buy a SSL certificate or look for an alternative such as Blackberry BES (which isnt cheap)

We have a client with two IPhones and this is what they have done, IMAP with Exchange 2003

I'm more than likely wrong here, but surely if you enable mobile devices within Exchange System Manager you should be able to connect without issue, no?

Even with SSL we still have to open the necessary ports so he can access the exchange servr everywhere. However this puts the exchange server at risk as mail relaying.

    So it's a tricky one

We have some customers using iphones and imap

as far as im aware you can set it so that only authenticated users can connect to the server and so it cannot be used as a relay, none of our customers have had any problems

In Exchange System Manager find the server you want to configure relaying on and expand protocols to show the SMTP server.

Right click and select Properties > Access > Relay Restrictions > Relay.... and then choose which users you want from the Users button. If relaying is already controlled by IP then you wont be able to select Users.
