Found this on the BBC web site, it seems the next generation of chips are coming http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7002267.stm

I know this should be on the news forum but I don't have the rights to do so.

looks like its gonna be an interesting line up, I hope AMD manage to surive Intels onslaught. The last thing any one wants is for Intel to dominate the market and turn into another microsoft

Intel's latest offering closes the one advantage AMD have had for years, Memory I/O

the new Tigertons smash the crap out of Barcelona's in floating point ops, and the memory bandwidth is massive despite the off die memory controller

AMD will survive, no doubt, but they are now where Intel was at the height of the P4 fiasco, losing hard and bugger all on the roadmap

I do love the pendulum antics of the IT world :)

I heard rumours that intel are being fined by the EU courts, is that correct?

    Allegedly.

The EU's case stems from Intel's abuse of their market position - offering 'incentives' to bulk customers to choose to switch to, or continue to use, Intel over AMD. The EU alleges that many of these 'incentives' were little short of bribes or threats.

Since this crap goes on all the time in other areas of business (particularly the supermarkets, whose predatory business practices make the chip industry look like a shining example of wholesome business practice), I fail to see why the EU would want to pick on Intel over, say, Sainsburys or Tesco. Oh - wait a minute - could it be that they're not American companies, and have thousands of British lobbyists making sure that the EU can't touch them with a ten foot pole?

    Cynic - moi?

why do you need permission to post news, thats the sort of thing you'd expect of china not an internet forum :p

they were investigated into on various occassions because of their "relationship" with dell. People were saying intel were selling dell cheap CPUs so they would only use theirs. What was daft was AMD had the better CPU then and when they finally decided to sell AMD CPUs intel released the conroe which kicked ass.

Yeah, it's pretty standard practice. Stuff posted in the news forum is usually re-displayed on the front page of the site... and if that wasn't controlled, you could get just about anything showing up there.

I was reading a quick brief description about the new Quad-Cores from AMD and I have to say, I cannot wait for the bad boys to be released. Hopefully they should put AMD back on top. And lets see Intel quiver..lol :biggrin

Unfortunately for AMD, I don't think that's gonna happen, and neither does Anand: link

Me neither, its like Nvidia and ATI.

In my opinion Nvidia are dominating at the mo and will do for while to come.

The Barcelonas will only beat out the Tigerton in specific workloads, and theres not very many of them
as a gamer all you should be caring about is floating point and the Tigertons beat the Barcelonas hands down

the Barcelona is going to start at < 2Ghz whilst the Tigerton is going to come in various flavours even over 3 Ghz

The slight memory I/O benefit the Barcelonas has doesnt really make up for its low fp performance, and across a standard workload that uses both, the Tigerton beats it, in CPU intensive workloads, the Tigerton beats it, only a pure memory I/O workload will benefit from the Barcelona

Lets bare in mind these are Server chips and chipsets, these are not desktop products and any desktop product derived from them will differ in its performance as it will be designed for different workloads
