I have come to the realisation I do not enjoy/able to sit and study for certs

Im just going to accept it.. I have not taken any certs since the days of actually trying to get into IT, as I simply dont enjoy studying outside of a classroom environment. I do enjoy learning out of pure interest but not following exam objectives. Is this really going to hurt my future career in IT? am I pretty much doomed by not having any advanced professional certs?

Lots of people in the more technical roles do not hold any certs what so ever.

In fact a few people who I know have moved on into IT security and infrastructure roles straight from service desk, skipping desktop support!

Junior Dev -> Senior Dev -> Retirement

I do small bits of infrastructure and security, but it was never my job description.
Always been capable of supporting my own desktop.

Dave as a long time developer. What’s your favourite language? And did you ever learn one that was a complete waste of time? I should as you these things more often as it fascinates me for some reason no joke

Favorite languages, for a long time was C++ and then Java, now i am more of a polyglot and its whatever gets the job done.

Biggest waste of time, well I don't invest a lot of time in languages I'm not interested in using to make stuff generally, they are tools, a tool that either helps or it gets tossed aside. So worst language is probably Prolog or Forte. I also tend to prefer static type'ed languages, but that's just me. Worst technologies I spent time on, DCOM, EJB and Vignette.

I've learnt and discarded a LOT of stuff though (languages, design patterns, frameworks, middle-ware, practices, etc) that's how you get better, see what works and what doesn't.

Cheers Dave, I guess that's what sorts the juniors from the senior developers, knowing what best to focus on and what's a waste of time. It's always fascinated me, infact I should start a new thread and stop jacking this one!

No set path in this IT game unfortunately.

A couple of certs would not hurt at this stage of your career – the volume of CVs I get for positions requiring 2-3 years experience in network support is unreal. If the CV is well written and has a couple of certs to compliment the experience then it does get my attention.

The more senior you get the better it is to have the relevant certifications, the fact that I haven't done any certifications in 2 years doesn't worry me but at the time I was glad I did the hard study for my VCAP when I did. Having certifications certainly helped me along my IT career, whether that was the MCSE or the CNE they were all relevant at the time.

I don't think they're supposed to be enjoyable. :') They're not marketed as entertainment. They're a means to an end. You have to suffer sometimes to attain a goal.
