    Hi,

I'd like to do a poll to ask all of you, throughout your entire career, how you got your job, so you can answer more than 1.

For example I have got 1 job through applying to an advert, 1 through an agency, 1 through networking.

It is said that the majority of jobs are filled through networking, I just wondered if that was true for people here.

I got both of my jobs through networking.

Most importantly though, once I got through the door I managed to impress and went from a normal data input guy, to the trainee IT guy, to the senior IT guy in charge of basically everything! I've been here just under 5 years.

For all my IT Jobs I applied directly to the organisation, apart from one where they contacted me (the part-time IT trainer).

I'm still on my first job. I went through an agency for a finance position at the company and impressed the IT manager with my knowledge. Got promoted into IT, and I'm still there :)

I applied through an advert. My job was never technical really until about 4 years ago (been here 9 years), but it has developed and progressed to a point where it is more technical than manual labour as I now have to do things like server configurations and liase with BT bloke from time to time for networking.

My first (and current) job was gained through 'networking', my mum works for the company and the subject of expanding the IT department beyond its single part time member came up so she put my name forward. I was hired on a 6 month, part-time, temporary contract which was quickly made full-time, extended and then made permanent!

The IT team here is now the massive amount of 3 people strong and I'm the only full-time member (I'm also the only support tech, my boss is a developer by trade and the other person in the depratment is 'IT by accident'!)

First IT Job - I took an Agency Admin. job, as a 'stop gap' whilst looking for IT work. The IT Director there was a great bloke, and after many coffee break chats, he asked me to help with a few little jobs like changing backup tapes and helping users. I was then offered 6 months work with the IT department (The IT Director and the Infrastructure Manager), to help with some holiday cover, and in case a potential MIS system migration was approved. Unfortunately it wasn't, so I was laid off.

Second IT job - advertised in the local paper - IT Technician. I'm still there now, as Senior Technician.

Option missed - how about being contacted directly by the company?
