I've got a QNAP, 4 bay that I love, it can do virtualisation, has 4 x 1GB NICs, quad core, 16GB RAM, but its easily 6 years old. Bizzarely I still get updates on it which blows my mind. For that reason I'd be happy to stick with QNAP.

I'm thinking of upgrading to something that either has more bays or at least has the ability to use an SSD as a cache, although I suppose if I move from spinning disks to all flash I don't need that.

Do any of you have any recommendations for me? Do other NAS brands keep updating kit they no longer sell like QNAP?

Any reocmmendations on disks? I have 4x 2TB WD Greens in mine and I'm creaking for space a little. 4TB disks would be good I suppose. Use case, store family photos and videos, I like that it has something called Browser Station on it which I can VPN onto if I want. I can share files with my family etc

    I built my own.

    4 x 6TB spinning rust and 2 x 120Gb SSD
    16Gb RAM
    Fractal Design Case
    Multicable
    PSU
    Intel(R) Pentium(R) Silver J5040 CPU @ 2.00GHz, ASUSRock J5040 Mobo with a 4 port SATA card

Mobo, CPU, RAM and SATA card package off ebay

    Storage some disks I acquired.

    Running OpenMediaVault cost approx £250

Spinning rust gives me a fraction over 15Tb with the OS on an SSD and as I'm using Docker, it's configs go on there.
I don't even make this thing sweat just storage at the moment, movies, TV Series, Music and Photos. Will be looking at using some form of AI with the Photos to see what that can do.

Oh and whilst OMV can be used for remote access, I choose not to. Too many bad people out there. Now, where's my tin foil hat?

Oh wow now you’re talking. I bet yours is a rocket compared to mine. Let me compare our CPUs. Does need to be a low power cpu like that doesn’t it otherwise might as well run a server 24/7
