I've been studying CompTIA materials as part of a training course I'm on. I've recently passed my CompTIA exams. :)

I get the impression that these certs are best as stepping stones to more advanced qualifications because when I do job searches, almost every IT job is asking for CCNA or MCSE or whatever, and very few specify CompTIA certs.

Could I be wrong? I hope so, I am desperate for an IT job at the moment. I worked as a jobs-body in an IT office about 8 years ago and now I want to get back into the game.

Hi & welcome to CF :)

The Comptia certs are great certs to have in their own rights as well as great certs to build upon. They (the A+ & Network+, or the Security+) can be used as part of the MCSA/MCSE (A+ & Network+ for the MCSA only). Plus the Comptia certs can go quite high on the UK NQF, eg Project+ sits at level 4 - the same level as the LCGI, NVQ 4 & maps to a Cert of HE.

Hi mate, the CompTIA certs are certainly well known and highly thought of in the IT industry. Admittedly they aren't as well known as your Cisco or Microsoft certs but I personally think thats just because of the amount of publicity surrounding those companies. I myself am booked on the CompTIA Security + course to gain the :Security specialisation for my MCSA and MCSE.

Ah, thanks for the welcomes! :) I feel personally that the CompTIA exams helped a great deal, since they cover the basics of just about everything IT-support-related. Even stuff related to how to talk to customers, professionalism, everything but the kitchen sink really. ;) Whether employers in the UK feel the same way is another matter. I guess maybe those employers who know more about them will tend to value them in their staff more.
