    Hello everybody,

I'm thinking strongly about going for an MCSE and/or MCDBA.
I am quite attracted to roles involving Server admin or DB admin.

I'm 22 and have a Computer Science Degree and am in my first job which is Tech Support. But it is not somewhere I see myself in 5 years time.

I understand that MCSEs are primarily targetted at professionals who are already in a role such as Server Admins, but I think it's something I could handle.

Have a lot of you undertaken MCSEs/MCDBAs without having been in that particular field professionally beforehand?

I'm wondering if it is more a case of get the job -> get the cert or get the cert -> get the job.

Also, I plan to be doing the home stduy route and I've been looking round to find exam prices/how often they occur/location etc but so far I've only been able to see exams tied into those £4000 courses.

    Cheers

    Welcome to CF!:)

Instead of the home study route, you could use self study and save yourself some money. Take a look here.

    Hi and welcome to CF!

You *can* take M$ exams without doing courses, and I'm sure someone will be along soon to point to the URLs!

Thanks for all the replies :D

Ahh yes, when I said home study I meant self-study. I figured the courses had lots of classroom based activities but from what I've just been reading it seems like they give you a load of materials and say "off you go, go learn it"
