I'm studying for the MCTS certification in .Net Framework ASP.NEt 3.5 apps (whew!). I have always enjoyed Visual Studio and the whole Microsoft programming structure makes sense. I got my Open University Web Applications Development certificate in 2008. This was great and got me my first job after a long break but I am back with the unemployed now. Thing is, I really don't like PHP and most noob-type jobs do prefer you to use Open Source technology. I'm studying MCTS so I can show employers (and their gatekeepers) that I am serious about C# and ASP.NET. As is obvious, I cannot gain commercial experience if I am not at work!

    Hello Amanda,
It seems to me that it is the gate keepers that are a bit part of the barrier dividing our learning and its commercial application. Soon after the recession bit deep I was dropped from a medium sized company having written their reporting application using win forms/Crystal/VB/SQL server. Since then I have attended several interviews with varying degrees of success. Some of the positions were not suitable but gathering information about the companies and the job has proved nearly impossible; I go along anyway just in case.
The agencies that get between applicants and employers know little about our work so they tick their way through a list of requirements. A typical example is to list .NET and ADO.NET as separate requirements. And of course there is always the 2/3 years commercial experience. IMO this country is not good at training. Companies seem to want to wait for someone else to do it and then accept the benefits. Trained people are in short supply. At my recent graduation ceremony at Liverpool I must have been one of amongst something like 5-10% of the British students taking the MSc IT where all of the others were from overseas. If you have any advice for getting past the agency guys with the X-Factor hair styles and long shoes do let me know.
Nevertheless, at the moment I am working on 4 web sites using ASP to keep my skills up to date. The Microsoft Dream Spark Program allows registered students free use of all of the major development applications so long as they are not used for commercial gain. It is well worth a look.
    Regards Mark
