It is a hard exam! :biggrin

Have you done the 70-270 yet? It helps to have the 70-270 and 70-290 before doing the 70-291 IMO 8)

    Hi Sparky...

Haven't done the 70-270 yet but I was advised by a friend to go straight to 291 after 290. I'm 2 weeks into the study for 291 and am struggling slightly with DNS at the moment... I think I should be ready for the exam in another 2/3 weeks as I am putting in tons of study hours.

Sorry if im going to drop the bomb shell on on you mate but forget that 2-3 weeks goal.... I was studying for 6 hours a day for 3 months and i didnt finish the material! This exam in the 2000 MCSE was 70-216 (if im wrong someone correct me!) ITS A BEAST! Subnetting, DNS, DHCP, RRAS,IPSec and WSUS - you need to know them inside out!

Im hoping to take the exam soon but dont rush this exam my friend cause it will bite and bite hard!

Welcome to CF! and what DNS problems you having? :biggrin

Since work is paying for the exams/books they have given me a deadline for end of January...

Earlier this year I studied for the CCNA for 3 months solid but never sat the exam (still kicking myself for that). I have subnetting sorted and DHCP and WSUS worked out. DNS has always given me a nosebleed...but I'm reading up and practising in my lab over the last few days.

Since the exams are paid for I might as well go for it (hey I might scrape a pass!). I know what you mean though... the 291 is a social-life killer!!

    Welcome!

70-291 is indeed akin to 70-216... the dreaded Win2K beast exam. Study well... it's quite difficult. Best of luck to you!

That’s a very tight timescale; do you have much commercial experience of the topics covered in the 70-291? I have worked on larger networks that have a more complex topology compared to what I usually support on a daily basis but that didn’t mean the 70-291 was going to be a walkover for me, it was a *very* difficult exam.

What area of DNS are you having problems with?

I have quite a bit of networking experience... I currently work for a large investment bank who have a huge network and I get to do a lot of basic maintenance. I have the TCP/IP / Subnetting, DHCP, WSUS side of things sorted. Unfortunately I don't deal with DNS (esp. Microsoft's implemetation) at work so I lacking in that area. However I have created a study plan for DNS with stretches 2 weeks and I will also spend my lunch hour at work with some of the networking big boys to pick their brains.

Might be an idea to set up your own DNS server to get an idea of what the different zone types are and how A records (etc.) work in regard to DNS resolution. Also configure another DNS server and configure zone transfers etc.

Hope all goes well for the exam, have you booked it yet? 8)
