I have been browsing this forum since yesterday, after searching online about the Advent training course, like many others on this forum.

My name is David, I'm from Edinburgh and I'm 22 years old. I'm currently working in Somerfield, have done for 4 years now and I have to say, it's getting really dull. I went to college last year to do a sports course but it turned out to be rubbish and they told us that after the course, out of around 30, only around 4 people would end up with jobs. So now I'm looking to get into IT, which I was looking to do before I chose the sports course. Anyway, that's a little about me :)

I was noticing that many people choose to go the self study route on this forum and I was wondering how possible it is to go all the way to mcse level this way?

I also noticed that many people mentioned that with Advent you don't get the a+ and n+ certs, though the pack I received from them shows that you get the compTIA a+ very early on. Can anyone explain what the n+ is?

Very nice forum, keep up the good work.

Hi Dave and welcome to the good ship CertForums.

Can't comment on Advent, but as you've searched the forums already, I'm sure you've found loads of stuff. You can indeed go all the way to MCSE using self study, it's a long and sometimes painful journey but it can be done. Quality books and a home network that you can break and rebuild are a necessity.

When you start, I'm sure the guys on the forum will be only too glad to help :thumbleft

    Hi and welcome to CF!

N+ is a sort of abreviation of Network+, which is another CompTIA cert.

It is a base cert, much as is A+, but concentrating on Networks. IMHO is is excelent as a base for both Microsoft certs and Cisco.

Thanks for the warm welcome and nice feedback.

I had actually presumed that google wouldn't actually 'produce' on the search for n+ but I was mistaken.

In regards to needing a network to take apart and replace, what sized network are we talking about? 2,3,4 pc/laptops? Either way, Advent or self-study will require me to obtain the same resources so it should be fine.

Going to take this post to a more fitting topic ^^ :D

    Many thanks,

    Dave.
