Is MCSE the best way for me to go? Or should I be looking at something else?

Do you currently work in IT, or have any IT experience?

Well the recommended & preferred route is to do the CompTIA A+, then the Network+ , followed by the Microsoft MCDST.

These can be self-studied, and the recommended book for the CompTIA A+ is the Mike Meyers All in One study guide.

Also, the MCSE is not an entry level cert, and Microsoft themsleves recommend the following for a candidate:-

Ah ok, I have not looked into ComTIA tests.

Where can you book CompTIA A+ tests in the UK?

With regards to the MCDST why you recommend this over MCSE or MCSA?

The CompTIA exams can be taken at either a Prometric centre or Pearson Vue, but the Microsoft exams are only available at a Prometric centre.

The MCSA and MCSE are not 'entry level' certs and having these certs with no industry experience to back them up may put off potential employers. Once you've got into the industry and have some experience under your belt, then that's the right time to pursue these.
