Hey there all,

Just wanted to say Hello and that I'm really pleased that I found this site and forum.

I'm probably not the first to register here thinking of a career change. I was toying with the idea of doing a course put on by a TP, but after reading through a number of very useful and informative threads here, I've decided the self-study route would probably be better for me.

CompTIA A+ (220-701 and 220-702) first of all.

Welcome to CF Jim and GL with the studying. The A+ is very good one to start with in terms of self study. There is significantly less outlay than other methods as well, if you then decide it's not right for you.
