Just posted a topic in the training section, but thought I would say hello here too. My name is Lloyd, I'm 22 and from South Wales. I have spent the last 3 years in and out of different uni's trying to find a career I am interested in, but was totally unsuccessful until my girlfriend said "you always loved computers, why dont you look into something like that" and the rest was history!

I would like to be a technician or networker, and am contemplating either going back to college to do my A+ qualification, or study from home. I am still a newbee to all this though so I will be bugging you lot for a while to come I think... :)

Hello and Welcome to CF :biggrin

Before you go down that road.

You should do some real soul searching to find out what are your strengths and weakness are and help you understand the skills required!

When you said you like computers, do you like using the software? MCDST

Do you like building or modifying the hardware?
Building computers for family and friends? A+

Do you like using software to design and create pictures. Web design

Do you like using detective methods to analyse and solve problems and then relay the answers in clear and logical manner to other people N+ MCSE MCP

    Or like programming.

Thanks for that Monkey, I think my main interest is in the software over the acutal hardware. I have little interest in web or graphic design. Would the A+, networking+ route still apply if I wanted to go down the software MCDST road?

Yes A+ is a good starting point and is highly recommended. If you get chance have a word with simongrahamuk using your PM. Simon has the MCDST qualification so he can answer you questions on this. However in the mike meyers book and on the MS website it does show A+ comptia to be the starting route to MCDST.

A+ gives you a strong foundation in trouble shooting skills for hardware and software.

    Good Luck!

    Hi there,

A+, N+ are great foundational certs and will give you a good, broad base to build on even if you decide against networking/system administration.

I started the A+ and actually used the material to learn the field (if that makes sense) not just to have A+ to my name.

    What part of South Wales?

    Regards

    Si
