    Actually in Idaho, not only can you say "Christmas" in public schools, but "religious" Christmas music is played on the PA system and the kids sing "religious" Christmas music in the Christmas play. In California, that would get you shot. Of course, singing about dreidels would get you hung *and* shot. :wink:

    happy crimbo to everyone on CF, hope you've all got your drinks ready inkaholik or not. Personally I will be sparing a thought this year for people we will leave behind when 2009 ticks over both in my family and UCM.

    Not sure, but it has nothing to do with the birth of Christ (routinely assessed by historians to be somewhere around mid-end November). The date of 25th December was appropriated by the roman church when it spread to Europe because the date was already observed by pagans as part of a series of rituals cleberating the sun god. the church just 'piggybacked' on this date as it was convenient to do so.

    To be sure, no one knows what month Christ was born; the Church took December 25th as his date to tie in with Roman custom so as to avoid persecution.

    However, Christmas does indeed celebrate the birth of Jesus regardless of the fact that it matches with pre-Christian/pagan rituals.
