I did something similar by deleting my Ubuntu partition recently.

At the time found lots of hits on Google for Grub Error 17 - many of them seem to ended up re-installing Windows

Ended up re-installing Ubuntu on a 2nd drive and that set up a new Grub which allowed me to boot into Windows.

Not completely sure about this but I think you'll have to boot to the windows xp cd and the recovery console and do a repair of the MBR.

Boot using the XP CD, go into a recovery console, type fixbmr, then fixboot. (could be the other wat around). 8)
