File saving problem in XP Pro

I have a small problem with one of my bosses pc's that is driving me a little crazy.

1st He seems to have some problems saving files to the desktop. When he tries he is given a message that he has insufficient rights to do this. If he saves it to a local drive first and then copies it to the desktop then it works.

2nd The second one is that he often gets access denied or network path not found messages when he accesses the network. The trouble here is that he has the problem and then tries a few minutes later and it's no problem.

His machine is running XP Pro, we are running a Linux file server here and it's also the "domain controller". The version of Linux is SuSE 7.6 and is still running samba 2.x.

Any ideas as to what the problem might be would be helpful. Personally I think it's a problem with the samba.
