:dry What is the best way to make space on fat32 hard disk that is nearly full on a windows 98 computer.Peter.

Probably stating the obvious and not quite what you're looking for but deleting some non essential stuff would seem to be favourite, prehaps clear out the temp folders. Other than that buy a bigger hard drive and ghost it across.

Sorry phil I should have said I only have four options,

Compressing the hard disk by using the diskspace 3 utility,
Compressing the hard disk by using the Doublespace utility,
Defragmenting the hard disk using defragmenter utility (My Choice)
adding another hard disk to windows 98

Well I suppose it does depend on whether you have the cash available but my choice would be to buy a new drive, the price of storage has never been cheaper. I've never been a fan of the compression utilities, far too easy to go wrong and when they do you know about it. You tend not to just lose a few files to corruption, you wind up losing the lot. I suppose you may claw a bit of space back by defragmenting and it would be worth doing anyway as a no cost performance enhancing option but I don't think the amount of space would be significant especially with the bloated programs these days. My vote, slap a disk in.

Thanx Phil the reason I gave the 4 choices is because it is a mock test and I have to choose one.

    cheers, Peter.

Lol:!: I have to admit also that I had no idea this was a mock question.

Well, I'll say defragmenting, the third choice.

The question says how can you make space on the current hard disk.
Adding another isn't utilizing the 'current' hard disk more, it's shifting it to another disk.

The other choices aren't MS products (at least I think, though they may well be), so I reckon won't be the correct choices.

But surely defrag doesn't make any space. It hust moves stuff about.

Well AndyL your right, defragmentation increases performance as far as I'm aware, by putting files into contiguous clusters.
I don't think it actually saves physical space.

I mean a cluster can only hold a maximum of 1 file, so like you say, it's merely moving the files around to the disk doesn't have to work as hard finding files if they're on non-contiguous clusters.

Maybe I'm missing something, and it does actually save disk space also.

Btw Peter, I'm more concentrating on 70-210, and 215 at the moment.

I didn't take A+ as part of my course, I'm just reading the book now and then to improve my hardware knowledge.
I may take the exam, not sure yet.Anyway I want to do 210 and 215 first.
All the same, I'm up for learning about it all the time.
