Sat the ms 70-290 today, after a week in shetlands and a 10 hr drive back last night. Didnt feel ready for it but had left it to late to cancel. And i was proved right. I scored a pathetic 370. The first 20-25 questions really had me stumped. I couldnt understand half of them let alone figure out the answers.
On teh failure sheet i got after wards the graphs are roughly :
Manage and maintain physical and logocal drives 75%
Manage and maintain users. computers and groups 45%
Manage and maintain access to resources 33%
Manage and maintain a server environment 45%
Manage and implement disaster recovery 25%

So i have a lot to revise on for the resit. I've used teh MS press book and cbt nuggets, but i guess i just didnt give enough time to it. So thats what i plan to do, just not sure when to book the resit as i have to take teh 291 and 270 as well all before march, so not a lot of time left.

One thing was that the woman at the test center said a lot of people had come out of that exam saying they didnt know teh material in teh exam as it didnt match what was in teh books, even those that passed it. Not sure how true that is, but i know some of teh stuff i covered wasnt even mentioned in my set of questions. Things liek DSMOD, DSRM etc, Shared Printers and Backups (i had 2 questions on backups)

Anyone get any advice for a resit?

Sorry to hear that bud, you know sometimes your mind is just not in it. Don't worry about the score, I am pretty positive if you just review your stuff and understand, you'll do much better the second time around.

Gutted for you, I hate failing an exam. Just wondering, why do you have to sit 270 and 291 before March?? Also its easy in hindsight but I'd of done 270, then 290 then 291..... for what its worth as I'd rate them in that order for difficulty. CBT Nuggets and I forget now, either Exam Cram or MS Press, I'm thinking Exam Cram 2 book were enough for me to get through that exam. The exam cram book is probably buttons on ebay now TBH so check it ou. Try and get the latest edition obviously.

290 was my biggest ever fail.

Servers not really my thing, but I thought I'd have a crack at it a while back.
    Haven't dared try it again...

JK want to sit those exams by march to get teh full MCSA, and MS retire it then.

I think apart from my mind not being on it, after a week away from home etc, i just cant remeber the stuff about shares and permissions, what over-rides what and how its all passed down via inheritence etc. I had a lot of questions on this in various ways, such as a user with several shares via a group permission, folder share or ntfs permissions and how to stop them having write permissions with out affecting other users etc, and that includes across a forest not just in a single domain. It got really confusing and messy for me. Unfortunatley thats teh bulk of sever admin, shares and permissions.

Eh?? Are you sure? Can someone confirm this please? I've just had a brief check on MS and didn't see it but I'm rushing to get out of the office. Twizzle if you are correct, you better hit the books ultra hard. Doesn't your MCDST count as your client exam on an MCSA? Sorry I'm sounding ignorant here :S

Only the MCDST is being discontinued at the end of March 2011, however it can still be used as credit towards the MCSA (provided you pass both MCDST exams). See here.

yeah i checked, seems i got it wrong, was thinking about teh 271 and 272 (reason why i did them last month!)

Well least it means i can take more time to get this done then. With teh 2nd shot vouchers, if you have the 2 exam pack do they have to be different exams or could you do teh same exam?? thinking if i fail it a 2nd time i'd have it already covered for a 3rd or 4th time, then just need another 2nd shot voucher for the 291.... not that i pplan to fail 3 times.........

Thank goodness for that, you can take your time now mate, there's no rush. 18 months I took to get my MCSE because some of the syllabus I hadn't had to do in work yet, at that time. I can't comment on voucher packs but if I may, I'm not usually a nazi but the way you are writting "teh for the" is freaking me out ha ha ha

Sorry to hear of the fail bud; its definitely not an easy exam.

I had a hard time with all the permissions etc as well, its really not easy to digest. I think I must of re-read it all 3-4 times before I felt like I was getting somewhere. What I did find really useful was to play with all the aspects of shares and permissions until I was absolutely sick of them, but it worked I have to say.

Best of luck on the resit mate. :thumbleft
