A user just called. Starting yesterday afternoon, he's had trouble with opening Excel on his PC. Whenever he tried to open an Excel file, the app locks up on him forcing him to do an "end task" when the task manager window pops up.

He's been working on it this morning, trying to use "recover files" but no go. I tried to look this up on the internet but can't find a reference to this specific problem. He says that there have been no recent upgrades to his system and, as far as he knows, nothing was recently downloaded from the internet. Several other people log onto his PC to access their e-mail accounts. I'm about to go other there and take a look but about the only thing I can think of off the top of my head is to uninstall and reinstall Excel...I'm not sure I can even do that since it's all part of the Office XP Pro suite.

Any advice/assistance you all can render will be appreciated.

You can just remove Excel. Just go to Add / Remove programs, select change MS Office and then Add / Remove features. This is Office2k - may be slightly different on other versions.

From there you should be able to set Excel as "not available" which should uninstall. To reinstall go back in and select "run from My Computer".

On the issue of it not working - I am not sure. You say other users use the computer? does it work for them? Short of a decent answer - I would say an uninstall / reinstall - or even try clicking Repair Office from the same menu above as Add/Remove office features.

I ran a repair on Office and lo and behold, the software did find something to repair. We also cheated quite a bit. Turns out that the user's wife is an Excel guru. He e-mailed the offending .xls document to her and she fixed it in about 15 minutes. We figured that another user had tried to copy the file and broke the links, completely screwing it up.

Anyway, the file works now, Excel works now...the only remaining problem is that the voice recognition software still tries to install everytime you open excel. I can't figure out where it lives or how to get rid of it. The guy at least can get his end-of-week reports done and the rest of it I'll try and figure out later.

There is an option in windows that causes the voice recognition to install, have a look at the reginal settings in control panel, you could also insert the office disc and there should be an option to 'install/uninstall components'
