Somehow yesterday I got a trojan (malware) after i had left my nephew unsupervised on the pc (he is 7)

After eventually getting rid of the trojan (I hope) I can go on the net, download stuff at the same speed as I always could but when I try to connect to AOL I get message saying no modem connected.

Also when I looked at my network connections this afternoon for some reason they were all blocked (I use nortons & comodo is available)

I thought that this would probably be the reason for me not getting connected to AOL but after allowing the network connections I am still getting the same no modem message

    Any ideas anyone

    Steve

Is it a USB modem or ethernet one? Are there any clues in network connections? Have you tried repairing the connections?

you dont *really* need 2 software based firewalls and sometimes, they can conflict. plus have AOL as an ISP doesn't always help, or so i have been told.

cheers mate when i got aol i had noticed that it doesnt seem that secure anyhow, i dont even use thier sofwtware but if I need to I want to know that it will work.

I also have started using firefox instead of ie as its supposed to be a lot safer

    Hopefully everything is sorted now

    Cheers once again

Now that everything is sorted again, why don't you get shot of AOL completely? I'll never understand why anyone would run something that is, basically, shite on thier PC. Honestly, it takes over your system, is impossible to remove properly without formatting & reinstalling and I won't even look at a friend's PC until they've got rid of it. Its a throwback to when nobody knew about the 'InterWeb' and should have been taken out the back of a barn and shot long ago.

This article makes for interesting reading...

Your system restore was it always kept on so ton speak, as if it is/was then that means your trojan coming back to haunt you. Take off restore do a virus scan then put restore back on (if you like) and see what goes.

As far as i know restore keeps information about your com on the last settings or whenever you backed them up, so if you had restore or saved at a certain point when the trojan was on your system then every time you go back to them settings you will have the trojan in the system.

People feel free to correct me if im wrong

yeah I dont use the software I just use them as an isp.

I have just completed a survey for them and I told them their software looked circa windows 95 and that it didnt seem very secure

although I was impressed in which the speed of the router and setup disk arrived which was 12 days everyone I know (none of which are with aol) have waited for 2 or more weeks.

So I am quite happy with it:D
