I would say yes, its pretty important that it is XP, as the exam objectives cover mostly XP/2000

Agreed. Whilst other platforms will get an honorary mention, not having an XP PC to practice on for your A+ exams would be lunacy... but as they're not too expensive these days, you should be able to pick something up relatively easily! (eBay example.)

    Good luck with your studies.

Well Arroryn has hit the nail on the head there! The only problem is getting hold of XP at decent price.

Have you tried :- Amazon, Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade with Service Pack 2 = £92.98

Those PCs on eBay apparently came with XP installed, with COAs (so I'd hope they weren't dodgy!). If they're on SP1, the SP2 upgrade can be done from Windows Update.

Erm, hope this aint too late or too obvious but if you're talking about whether you need XP for certification exams, can I just add to make sure you get XP Professional and not XP Home.

he is talking about the A+.

Can I also mention having a bit of knowledge of windows 2000 is needed too, so either getting a copy or making a note of the sections in compTIA A+ all in one exam guide 6th edition by Mike Meyers that talk about windows 2000.

Get the ones listed above, and install vm ware or virtual pc onto the system, and install each os.

This will help alot in your studies and Good Luck.

    Hope this helps...

edit: XP Pro would be more benefical than Home Edition. There are certain things you can do in PRO than HOME.

    Yep.

If you are going to go on and do any other Certs, especially Network+ or MCDST you will need to have XP Pro.
