Im not actively looking for a new job but I often look at whats common on certain job requirements and SQL keeps popping up when doing generic searches of “IT Support” . All I know about SQL is its something to do with databases.. Ive ignored it simply because the word “database” sounds boring, but I may have to look into it abit further.

Yup been using it on and off for 23 years.
I find it a bit dull too, as programmer so I am more interested in general purpose languages and specialist frameworks.

I think I'm going to do a little bit of digging into it, appears it may come in useful..

Not my core skill but definitely worth leaning the basics.

Try installing the express version and test creating databases and backup\restore etc.

In job adverts it might mean two different things:

SQL as the query language - that's what you use to get data out of databases, typically people working with data (analysts etc) would need to know this. Some application support jobs require this.

SQL as Microsoft SQL server - knowledge of the database software from ms. So it can be useful to know how to create, modify, backup & restore databases. This can get really complex and usually more involved things would be done by people working full time with databases.

Definitely worth knowing some basics - tons of resources out there. I would not go too deep though unless a job requires it. Often as an admin you might be asked to install SQL or maybe restore a DB but usually administration would be done by people working with the data. Depends on the company, as always...

More than likely some basic tasks using MS SQL server if listed under an IT Support position.
