Just wondering if the majority of people do training outside of work/ do certs etc in your IT departments? I was thinking about this today and I would say out of approx 100 staff members maybe 10 are actually studying doing certs etc

nope. No-one in my direct team studies for certifications, and I dont believe many others in IT as a whole do either. Many study the content for learning, but they dont worry about the exams so much.

The majority of people I worked with (even outside of Boson and Transcender) got certified. However, from those who I have met but not worked with, it seems as if the majority do NOT get certified. Some simply don't have the ambition or desire to learn and progress in their careers - they are content to simply do the job in front of them.

I think I'm the only person in our dept of 8 to have taken any cert exams in the last couple of years. One of the other chaps has done some in the past and I think is planning to do a couple exams next year.

I am pretty much the only one certified in my department. Most of the IT people have just university degrees.

I'm not so sure about that to be honest. I want to increase my knowledge, be better at what I do, and advance my career. But I have only a single IT cert/qualification to my name (and it's ITIL).

The thing (with me at least) is, Studying doesnt work well with me. I learn in classes, I learn better by solving the problems in front of me, but studying doesnt seem to hold my attention. I find it difficult to put in whats needed to pass an exam (certainly via the SS route), but that doesnt mean that I dont advance and better my knowledge/ability.

Don't flip my logic... I never implied that people who tend to not get certifications aren't motivated to succeed. I implied that people who aren't motivated to succeed tend to not get certifications.

I'm currently the only one out of four training and taking exams atm, but two out of the other three are mcse's etc back from the nt4 and 2k days who havn't updated. Think it's an age/time thing, one I know is looking at upgrading soon though.

In our department, all of us study (it's part of the job/CPD). As for certs all of us do them, it's just a case of the frequency. It ranges from 1 a year to 4-5 a year.

Some people who pass their driving test with ease still can't drive a car from a to b without making massive errors in judgement on the road , having the certs just means that you can parrot the answers it doesn't mean you understand them. Experience at doing the job day in day out will always count for more

    We have

    9 People on Service Desk,
6 People on Desktop Support (My Department),
8 People on Tech Services (3rd Line)

and as far as I am aware, its just me that is looking to carry on with exams and Certs. Its funny but we were talking about this the other day and one of the Desktop Guys stated "I dont bother with learning, I cant see the point".

    Gobsmacked!!
