well it all depends how 'buggered' the disk is
knoppix is a cd bootable linux distro, that can read windows disks, so if its a problem that windows doesnt like, knoppix may well be able to recover it, and allow you to copy important stuff to CD/USB
but if its a physical problem it becomes alot more complicated :/

If the disk has been formatted, can Knoppix still retrieve it or will I need another program??

if the disks been formatted you will need special programs :)
and depending on what type of format that was done unless you plan on going to a data retreaval company (see: cha ching!) id kiss the data goodbye :(

a 'quick' format just erases the file tables and index, the datas still physically there somewhere
a proper format rubs over it a bit more thouroughly

Thanks for the advice Phoenix. Running a program called GetDataBack for NTFS at the moment, so will see what the outcome will be with that.

Will download Knoppix and have a look at that also.

    Cheers
