    Hi guys,
was wondering if anyone can put me staright here,
i had a compac pc given to me, so first thing i did was look at the hardware that was in it,
    160 Gig HDD
    ati video card etc etc.....
now...heres what i planned on doing,
take the HDD out of the compac(as it has a legit XP Home on it)
and use that as my primary drive,
it worked a treat after installing(i had to reactivate windows though),
only thing is im encountering a problem when im trying to install the latest drivers for my video card, GEFORCE 5600XT,
yeah i know it aint the fastest card, but every time i try to install the drivers(93.71_forceware_winxp2k_english_whql)
it gets half way through then makes my monitor go blank, i get a flashing cursor on the top left of my screen for a few seconds then nothing......
i have been in the registry and removed the ati folder and also uninstalled the ati control panel/drivers......
any help would be greatly appreciated, im at my wits end here,
    thanks
    Mark

Hi Sparky, which driver version are you on currently?
I would try downloading & installing a slightly older version of the drivers (there's a link to the driver archive on the left hand side of the forceware download page).
I've sometimes had problems when installing the most recent version, even if they're WHQL-certified, going back to a previous version seems to help.
Haven't tried 93.71 yet (I'm still on 84.21!) so I can't comment on that version driver specifically.
    Hope that helps!

    didnt think of that,
will hunt through my older disks to see if i can find an older driver,
just thought i would update all the drivers for my new(ish)sytem while i was at it....did have a spot of bother installing the driver for my sound card as well , i thought it may be the way the image has been put on the hdd as to stop/hinder you changing /upgrading the hardware that came with the machine.....
fecking shop built machines......dont like 'em!:tongue
    thanks again

There should be a utility on the ATI site that will remove all traces of their drivers. Might be worth a pop as you may have missed something the Geforce drivers don't like.

OK, I can't find the software in question - maybe they've discontinued it. I did find this page on TweakXP that might offer some help though.

    4. Now, go to START - SEARCH - FOR FILES OR FOLDERS and do a search for all files and folders using the filename ati*.*
This search will normally give you 3 to 4 files found in your c:/windows directory and subdirectories (including the Windows/System directory). Select these files and erase them. Now go to your Recycle Bin and Empty your bin.

you should see the amount of files i have here!!!lol
...do or do not there is no try!
